Independence

Summer is officially here in Colorado!  This past week, the girls started their summer camp.  Elisabeth is no stranger to camp, but this was Allison's first year at camp.  She absolutely LOVED it!  They went to Casa Bonita for their first field trip.  Casa Bonita is a Mexican restaurant / entertainment place.  Apparently, the food is terrible but most kids love this place because there's all kinds of random entertainment -- from arcade games to cliff divers to costumed characters walking around.  When I picked the girls up after their trip to Casa Bonita, I asked Allison how she liked her first field trip.  She told me she loved it.  Then I asked her what she had for lunch.  "Chicken nuggets.  French fries.  And a Coke!"  A Coke??  The girls are never allowed to order pop when mom and dad are around!  When I questioned her about it, she simply laughed and said, "You weren't there!" 


I had given both girls some extra money to take on the field trip.  Allison spent her money on a sno-cone and cotton candy.  (Elisabeth chose to buy a stuffed animal and ring.)

The kids get a snack at camp each afternoon, and the kids are allowed to choose between regular white or chocolate milk.  When Elisabeth first started at BASE, we had a little problem with her ordering chocolate milk every time.  It took a while before she finally learned that chocolate milk is OK every now and then, but not  every day, and not at every snack.  We seem to be heading down this same road again....Allison told me that she has chosen chocolate milk every day so far.  When I incredulously asked her if she chose chocolate milk after having chicken nuggets, fries, a Coke, a sno-cone AND cotton candy at Casa Bonita, she simply laughed and said, "You weren't there!"  

Ah, I get it.  It's all about asserting independence and taking advantage of the fact that Mom isn't around to police the food/drink choices!!

Aside from the unhealthy food/snack choices, Allison LOVES camp so far.  She has made new friends, she loves riding the big bus, she is happy, she is having fun....and she is also wiped out.  In Week 1, they went on 2 field trips, and she fell asleep on the bus on the way back to school both days.  This no-nap thing will take some getting used to!  They are going on four field trips this coming week -- let's see if she can manage to stay awake!


The most exciting thing that happened at camp this week is Allison lost another tooth!  She is now missing 2 teeth on the bottom and has a gap big enough for a truck to drive through!

Both girls started softball/t-ball this week.  Elisabeth's team is the Angry Birds (Elisabeth thinks the name is so lame), while Allison's team is the Ladybugs.  We'll post pictures of our ball players soon!  


Today, Fred and I were working out in the yard when we asked the $64,000 question.  "Where are the girls, and what are they doing?"  No need to worry - they always find a way to entertain themselves.  Introducing...our ninjas!
