Hope

For a while now, our basement has looked like Hurricane Allibeth tore through it.  (Oh, wait, Hurricane Allison/Elisabeth did tear through it...)  We asked the girls to start picking things up today and they made some progress.   Progress is defined as picking up 5,238 out of the 22,345 LEGOs that were strewn all over...  

At one point, Elisabeth came running upstairs and said, "Mom, I need to show you something."  She led me back downstairs and introduced me to Hope.

Hope is a baby bunny who apparently fell into our window well and is trapped.  This window well is off the east side of our house.  We NEVER go to that side of the yard, and the fence is always locked so access is pretty much closed off.  Therefore, that window well does not have a protective cover over it like the one on the west side of the house does.  Upon closer inspection, I noticed a few rotting carcasses behind Hope that were being attacked by flies -- evidence that other bunnies have fallen in previously and never made it out.  Gross.


We want to get Hope out of there so we put a plastic bin with some carrots out there hoping to entice her to climb in so we can snap on lid on and then release her back into the wild.  She's smarter than that.  

So Fred put some boards up that would allow her to climb out.  So far, she hasn't been smart enough to figure out how to do that.  Instead, we've seen her trying to jump out on her own.  That bunny can jump at least 5 feet high...but so far it hasn't been high enough to escape.  Not sure how long Hope has been trapped, but she must've somehow known that we have a little girl in the house who loves bunny ears!

In other news, Elisabeth is on a reading binge and has read 32 chapter books in the last 2 weeks!  At the rate she's going, we'll be visiting the library every couple of days instead of once a week!

Fred has been busy painting the office and adjoining bathroom.  We also moved furniture around in the office and hauled the lounge chair / desk thing down to the basement.  The office is now an icy gray-blue, and the bathroom is currently being painted a complementary light gray.  The rooms look bigger and brighter already.  Nice job, Freddy.

BREAKING NEWS

We interrupt this post to bring you the latest information on Operation Free Hope.  Hope Bunny was successfully trapped in the plastic bin and released into the wild today.  The rescue operation took place so quickly that I barely had time to grab my camera to capture the historic moment.
