Not much to report from Casa de FLEA other some pretty exciting news about our smart kids!
Allison's teachers constantly tell me that she is such a good kid; she always listens, she always follows the rules, and she is always cooperative. I still have moments where I can't believe the angel they are describing is Allison because we don't always see those same behaviors at home. Regardless, it's probably a very good thing that she is doing so well at school! Since I know what she is capable of doing, I would much rather have a kid who is near-perfect at school and a little stinker at home, than vice versa!Last week, Allison brought home a Happy Gram, which is a memo the teacher sends home when the kids do something above and beyond what is normally expected. Here is what her teachers wrote:

In Allison's classroom, kids who break the rules receive what is known as a "busy packet." A busy packet is basically a detention for 4-year olds. At recess time, they have to stay inside and work on their handwriting and other activities that are much less exciting than recess. I'm not sure I agree with the whole practice since it doesn't seem like a logical consequence to punish the kids for an action has no relation to recess (if anything, the kids that receive busy packets probably need MORE recess time to help burn all that extra energy they have!), but I don't even need to worry about it because Allison is the only kid in her class of 11 students that has never received a busy packet! Yahoo, Allison!! She actually asked me if I'd make her a busy packet at home - ha!Elisabeth isn't doing so bad in school herself. At last report, she is still in the top reading group in her class and is reading at the 3rd grade level. Her latest obsession is the Magic Tree House book series; once she starts reading, she needs to finish the book before she'll put it down! She's very curious and will often ask us to Google stuff so she can learn more (last week, we googled the Titanic at her request). She always hits 100% on her weekly spelling tests, and I think the lowest score on her report card was for her handwriting!
Last week, she brought home a memo about an after-school math club that will be led by one of the 2nd grade teachers. At first I thought it was just another after-school club; nothing special. We quickly learned that this particular math club is a very big deal. For starters, only 20 out of 130 first graders were invited to participate in math club. That's right...you have to be invited to join. And it's not for anyone who wants to participate; it's only for the kids who are excelling in math and want extra challenges. Elisabeth was pretty excited about being selected to join this elite group of math gurus, and we're pretty proud, too. Way to go, Elisabeth!!
Since FLEA has no plans to travel anywhere over spring break, Elisabeth is signed up for a spring break camp with some of her friends at the rec center. They have a bunch of action-packed field trips planned, including visits to the Wildlife Sanctuary (this place has over 200 lions, tigers, bears [oh my!], mountain lions, leopards, etc. that have all been rescued from less-than-ideal circumstances), Jungle Quest (indoor zip line / rope climbing course), the Denver Aquarium, bowling alley, movie theater, a pizza parlor, and Joe's Crab Shack. They will also play mini golf, go swimming and climb the rock wall at the rec center! Not too shabby for a staycation, huh?Happy spring to all!
